Every Indian wedding has its own drama. One of the biggest challenges we’ve seen brides & grooms face is wanting everything to be perfect. The truth is that everything will not be perfect, and it’s crucial to 1) understand that and 2) determine what is most important to you.
I recommend that as soon as you are engaged, you should sit down with your partner and discuss what are your top 2-3 priorities. Mine were decor, hair & makeup, and having fun. My husband's top priorities were budget, entering on an elephant, having a Chelsea banner (sometimes I think he loves Chelsea more than he loves me!), and having fun. These are priorities that ideally you shouldn’t budge on throughout the planning process. Alternately, when it comes to other activities that aren’t on your priority list, you should be willing to be flexible. For example, if photography isn’t one of your top priorities, it should be okay to go with someone other than the most expensive photographer in town.
Setting priorities and revisiting them through the wedding planning process will make sure you stress only what is most important and stay calm when non-priority issues come up (which they will!). My husband and I also spent time with both sets of parents to understand their priorities. Your parents may or may not be want to plan the best wedding and up their aunty friends. It’s better to level set early on, so they know which of their wishes will come true, and fewer feelings are hurt down the road.
Anytime a stressful conversation comes up, it’s okay to go back to this Day 1 conversation and point out that 1) this is a priority topic, and we will find a way to come to a fair consensus: 2) this is not a priority topic, so let’s move on with the easiest / cheapest / etc solution.
While wedding planning will always be stressful, always remember to go back to your priorities, and regardless of what happens, have fun on your magical day(s)!
